Data driven and machine learning based approach for microgrid protection using EMTP873

Abstract
Modern intelligent digital relays embedded with phasor measurement units have facilitated easy access and collection of electrical signals in a microgrid. ? In this work, a model for detection, locati... see moreon and isolation of faults in AC microgrids is presented. The real time voltage, frequency and current data are processed via simple formulations to detect the fault. The tripping command is promptly communicated to the incumbent line relays within fault tolerance time, after fault detection. The proposed scheme assures reliable protection in grid connected and islanded mode of operation with added security in case of primary protection failure. Post tripping, the exact location of fault in any distribution line from the utility grid is predicted using a fault locator module. This module is designed and developed by gaussian process regression technique. Further, various machine learning techniques used for fault location has been explored and compared to establish the superiority of GPR method over others. Also the features extracted for model training is quite simpler, which imposes less computational burden on central protection computer. An IEEE 15 bus distribution system with synchronous and solar photovoltaic based DG is simulated in EMTP platform to generate the electrical data. Further the required calculations are performed in MATLAB 2020a.

Traveling-wave Fault Locator Model Development Using EMTP854

This presentation briefly discusses the development of a computer model of a traveling-wave based fault locator using EMTP, as well as simulation results using the developed model. Specifically, the b... see morelock discussed in this presentation is based on the double-ended method of fault location. Traveling wave extraction from raw waveforms and the time-of-arrival estimation using appropriate signal processing techniques are also briefly discussed. Simulation results using the fault locator model in a transmission system model are shown, and comparison of results with the fault locator of an actual traveling-wave relay are presented as well.

<h2 class="title">EMTP Europe User Conference 2019 </h2> <p class="tagline"><b>The EMTP User Conference pres... see moreentations are now available online!</b></p> <p id="text-intro"><b>Influence of HVDC Controls on Transient Stability of Synchronous Machines</b><br> With the energy transition in France and in Europe, the transmission grid is strongly impacted by the forthcoming connection of power electronics devices, such as offshore wind farms and HVDC interconnections. These new devices use power electronics converters that generate transients which are usually more complex to analyzed than for standard AC devices, in particular during faults. These phenomena can have an impact on the grid stability.<br> The presentation will focus on the transient stability studies of synchronous generator influenced by power electronics devices. The objective is to compare the critical fault clearing time for different fault locations, fault conditions and different HVDC converter fault ride through control strategies. Generic test cases as well as real scenarios are considered. In this study, the critical time is obtained with bisection method thanks to the new parameter sweep toolbox.
